I'm close to STL and am interested in Schaeffer's.
I looked on there site and found no info on testing oil.
Little help??
There are quite a few reps around the St. Louis area, which I'm sure would be more than happy to get you some info on where you can get the oil as well as test kits. I would call the home office and they can give you the name and number of the rep closest to you. Toll Free: (800) 325-9962
However, I'll give you the basics. They are availabe in 6 pack sample kits for $9.00 per sample, which is pre-paid (including postage), so it's just a sample and mail, which IMO, I've found is easier than the way Blackstone does it. Also, if you buy $500 or more worth of products (including trans fluids, gear lubes, greases, penetrating oil, etc...), you can get 3 sample kits for free. Just remind the rep when you place the order.

Pete, I called the lab to ask about this and found out that if you drop in a check for $6.50 with the sample and ask for a TBN, it can be done. The report will take a little longer to come back, as the TBN analysis is not done in house and it has to be sent off, then come back, before the report gets to you. Obviously, this is not something you'd probably want to do every sample, but if you're curious, it is an option.
If you're interested in having a TBN done on every analysis, I would reccomend getting the WebCheck kits that the reps have available as well. They run $15.00 per sample (comes in 6 packs also), but postage is not prepaid. That analysis goes to a lab in NC. Here's the WebCheck company's page, which is a division of WearCheck: WearCheck - Condition Monitoring through Oil Analysis Also, WearCheck is an independant company that is not owned or operated by Schaeffers.
Pete I would only add one comment to the shipping delay. Occassionally the local Post Office will stick the conatiner in the hazardous Material bin and could take days longer to get to it's final destination. Even though Schaeffer's and Blackstone have a letter stating that the US Post Office has approved the mailing of a used oil analysis and it is not considered Hazardous material - occassionaly it gets tossed in anyway. I switch runs to a different Post Office and the shipping to analysis time went back to under 10 days. Schaeffer's will process a 2 day turn around time after receiving the sample.
For those interested the normal limit for wear metals in Diesel engines are:
iron 100 ppm (200 ppm according to Navistar for the 7.3L)
copper 40 ppm
Chrom 40 ppm
Alum 40 ppm
lead 100 ppm
silicone 20 ppm
Here is the back side of every Schaeffer's Oil Analysis Report:
Who gives more detailed info?
Some oil analysis companies do not even break down which items on your report are wear metals, additives, and contaminants. Or give you the SAE grade of your sample.
I have 2 customers running Schaeffer's oil in there semi's hauling cattle and when there trucks came up positive for antifreeze Schaeffer's called them on there cell phone while they were driving.
so will they do a test on other oil? im thinkin of switchin to shaeffers
Absoutley. They'll test anything you send to them, not just their own stuff. And, no they won't...to those that might be thinking they'd report bad findings because it's not their oil. I've seen reports come back from other brands of oils that say all is normal and things look good.
Jeremy and Rich... thanks for the additional info. I had heard that I could ask for the TBN and it would get done, but did not get the small detail about the additional $6.50, which still keeps the total comparative price less than half of Blackstone's. I'm really not interested in the TBN for every sample, but I did want to see how it ended up on my last sample... I'll wait until I send in my 12K mile sample on my current load and let that suffice.
I got wrapped up last night with some other things and forgot to post my report numbers. I'll try to scan them and post tonight.
Just mailed in 19 oil samples last Tuesday (20 May) received all results today (29 May) That's about 6 business days considering the holday weekend and all. I mailed them in boxes, like I said - occassionally the Post Office tends to throw them in the special handling bin.
