Hack the Heater control valve ?

I'm tired of warm air coming out of the "fresh" air vents even when I have the temperature all the way down. It's especially bad after shutting off the truck for a few minutes, the air will come out hot then. It forces me to turn on the air conditioning in otherwise mild weather. The heater controls seem to act normally, but I'm guessing that the blend doors don't seal well enough to block all hot air when in the "off" position.

I'd like to be able to manually shut off hot water to the heater core when I want, but I don't know how to manually control the Heater control valve. Has anyone ever tried this or know how?

Pat

This thread is related to your question: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...her-modes.html

The heater control valve is supposed to have full vacuum in the "OFF" position and hence it should be closed. So you might have a leak in the "OFF" vacuum circuit.

In any case, in order to to manually shut it on and off, you will need to devise a way to apply and remove full vacuum to the heater control valve. Maybe you can "T" off from the main vacuum line that runs into the cab from the engine compartment using an electronically controlled vacuum switch...?

I had some cars (Triumphs, for sure, but also maybe my Hillman and Morris, as well)) "back when" that had a little petcock in the heater hose, in the engine compartment. Turn it of...no water passes through. One trip to the auto parts or hardware store should do it...possibly a small brass Ball Valve, or a brass gas line valve.

I'd make sure the circulation design of your motor isn't depending on that branch of the circuit, however, before shutting it off.

Rockledge, I'd like to have fresh, cool, outside air without resorting to the air conditioning system, so putting the control in the off position defeats my intent, as it shuts off all air from the vents. The heater control valve seems to work as Ford intended. I just don't like their intentions.

At first, I thought that the heater control valve might be controlled from the computer, but after your comments, and looking more closely at the shop manual, I now believe that it's a mechanical setup. So I wonder where I could get a electronically controlled vacuum switch?
