Ok here is my problem, The brakes on my trailer work fine but the break away switch doesn't work.
If I pull the pin it should lock the brakes on right?
So I tried a new switch and still the same thing Is this the proper way to test them or is there a different way and what else could I look at?
Sounds like a wiring problem - do you have 12vdc to the switch? BTW, make sure your trailer is never plugged into the TV when you test like this; some controllers don't take kindly to reverse voltage and will fry.
No TV hooked to the trailer just the trailer battery, Should there be 12 volts on the wire to the break away and then when pulled it allows the 12v to complete the circuit? the wires on the switch should be live?
I hate wiring problems ........
Where should I start?
I will have to have another look but I don't believe there is power.
One wire can be hooked directly to a live battery wire ? and the other one to the brake wire?
I found a diagram and it doesn't seem to match the way mine is wired.
If it is any help the trailer is a 21.5 ft fifth wheel
Sounds like Steina has it narrowed down. You should have power to the breakaway switch. When you pull out the "Pin" it completes the circuit and sends "juice" to the electric brakes.
Make your self a jumper with a piece of wire and some alligator clamps. Try to energize the switch and pull the pin and see what happens. You should then get power to your brakes. Good point on disconnecting sensetive electronics.
Have fun and enjoy. Isn't wiring a pain in the butt!
