knocking noise on start up - 98 explorer

my explorer has a knocking noise when you crank it up on a cold morning. when i bought it 2 years ago (used) i mentioned it to the salesman and he took it to the service dept, and found out it had a recall (tsb# 01m01, replace cam chain tensioner and lower intake gasket) well the dealer replaced those parts and it still does it, not so much when its warm outside only when it is cold. One mechanic told me that it is just the oil draining out of the tensioner and when I crank it, the oil takes a second to get back in (like that noise is normal) which he told me all 4.0 sohc motors do it. So if you have had this problem, or know someone who has, or know what the fix is for it, PLEASE help me out Thank you

It could be piston slap. When the piston gets cold, it contracts, and the clearances between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall increase. Until the oil gets up there to lubricate it, and the piston heats up, it will make the noise. Just stay off the gas while its doing it and you wont have a problem.

"stay off the gas while it's doing it..." doesn't that just sound like a Ford answer.
Get an automotive stethiscope, wait until the engine gets cold and pinpoint the location of the noise. If it's pistons, well, stay off the gas and don't plan any long trips anytime soon. If it is coming from the valve train, there is hope. I have a 1990 Ford Mustang with a 2.3L that did the same thing. Only it got worse and worse. Then I changed the oil (17000 miles later, don't ya just love Fords) and the noise got quieter, but still was there. Turns out all it was was sticky lifters. Changed them out at $7.50 a piece and it ran smooth as can be. The stethescope will pay for itself just by pinpointing one problem.
Hope all goes well.

Hey, its better than NOT staying off the gas and breaking a piston skirt...

In all reality, newer engines have looser piston to bore clearances and shorter piston skirts for gas mileage concerns, and a little bit of cold knock is to be expected. Shouldn't be a problem.

By the way, he said it was a SOHC motor, so I dont think its lifters...

Well ,when they did your lower intake an chain tensior ,hopefully they replaced the oil galley plug(restricter) that doesn't alow the oil to drain back out of the tensioner area.
also the next time you change your oil look for little yellow or white flakes of plastic in it ,this is from the timing chain guide and cassette could be going bad.
also don't forget there are two chain tensioners on this engine rh and lh.this enginge also use a jackshaft to drive the second camshaft.

you could also have a valve that is sticking as stated above.

Hmm, I have an Sohc Explorer also, and I have never had a knocking problem on startup. I wish I could help you, but I need more information. I know that the chain in the back of the engine can make noise, but that is a pita to fix.

I have 98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC that is doing the same thing. Dealer told me exactly the same thing. I live in the North East where temps have been in the teens for weeks. Anything above 2500 rpm and you would think there was NO oil in it at all. I'm running quality 5w30 oil, does anyone think thats too thin?? Any advise is appreciated.
