I'd like to make my truck a bit quieter, but I don't know much about mufflers or exhaust systems in general (other than that they rust out and bug the heck out of me!). The truck is OK at idle, but it will drown out a passing semi at highway speeds and I need to wear earplugs for any long distance trip.
Here's the situation: I've got a '62 F250 flatbed with a Detroit Diesel 4-53 in it. The engine feeds a four inch pipe that runs through the front driver's side wheel well then back, past the t-case and up into the bottom of the bed, where it forks and ends in two four inch chrome stacks. There is currently no muffler in the scenario. My limitations are threefold: I don't want to spend a fortune (duh!), the two stroke diesel will not run properly with much of any exhaust back pressure, and there's not much room under the truck to put anything wide.
Is there such a thing as a narrow, four inch muffler that is effective and not a bazillion bucks? Should I post this in the Super/Heavy Duty section too? Thanks everyone!
Not sure what to tell you there, most diesel mufflers are fairly large. How much room do you have lengthwise and widthwise. I think I might have a 4" muffler that should tone it down some without adding any backpressure.
You could go to your local exhaust shop and see if they have a cheap glasspack muffler to put in there, Our principle had an old Ford tractor that was really loud when he brought it in. It jus had an old straight pipe on it, So we welded in a glasspack. It wasnt as loud as it was before, Worth a try though.
If you can fit something about 8" in diameter, Magnaflow and Dynomax both have some nice straight through, round diesel mufflers and they make them in all different lengths from about 20" up to 30".
I've got maybe four feet of length but width is a problem - the pipe runs under the cab and comes close to the transfer case. 8" diameter might fit if I can change the angle to pull it away from the t-case though. As I look at some of the manufacturers' web sites I see that there are really lots of products that might do it for me, I just needed to have looked!
There's lots of straight-through round case "diesel" mufflers out there, in 5", 6" and 8" case OD, so I'm sure you could find something that would fit.
Just watch out for the mufflers with the louvers in them (like AFE, Jardine, etc)...they don't flow for crap even with the louvers turned backward.
Donaldson has a ton of mufflers made for the smaller Detroit Diesel engines. They have very low backpressure and have several in 4" in/outlets.
Im still checking around. If you dont find a Donaldson muffler just go a local Detroit dealer or online to find what you need. Chances are a muffler from DD will be cheaper than Magnaflow or Dynomax.
Edit- check out United Muffler Corp. Part # 9-0040 open diesel muffler. 4" inlet/outlet, and 20" long.
