Straight axle swap
I'm basically going to build up the axle until I'm ready to swap it out...if I do.
My questions here are:
1. Will I have issues with the leaf springs and shackles?
2. Will I have any issue with steering components? (i.e. will anything need to be changed to make sure it works?)
3. Will there be an issue with the driveshaft being too short or too long?
4. Is there any reason why this swap might be a bad idea?
Oh, and before I forget, you guys are awesome.
I'm extremely pleased that I found this forum. The knowledge that you guys have could almost put a haynes or a chiltons manual to shame.
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Direct swap, no problems.
Use the straight axle steering linkage.
My driveshaft worked on the straight axle just fine.
Straight axle ride is not quite as smooth, but tire wear is better.
Also I break and wear out less parts on the straight axle than I did on the TTB axle.
I have never been the biggest fan of the TTB.
Even if it might make a smoother ride, It is not high on my list of great axles.
I also don't expect a smooth ride. I drive a 3/4ton. I bought it for it's capabilities, not it's comforts.
Now hopefully I can get every other issue fixed so I can get this swap done.
Damn e40d transmission!!
