You would be surprised at how -few- different keys there are. Ford and GM had something like 15 different keys in the 70's.
As a side note, we were dispatched to a child locked in a car a few years ago. It was a first gen Explorer like my wifes. The other guys were beginning to work on one door and I walked over, stuck my key in and -click-. About had to pick the owner up off of the ground.

back in high school my best freind and i both had 80's dodge trucks. our door keys were diffrent but my ign key worked in his....i dont know how many times i moved his truck around town and made him look for it....his keys however didnt work on mine....it was a great practical joke till he started locking his doors.
Back in 1992 I had a company car Plymouth Acclaim and another guy I worked with had a company Dodge Spirit. My key worked in his doors and ignition but his did not work in either of mine. Needless to say his car got "parked around back" more then once. I also had two co-workers with 89 Ford Tempos both silver and one day the clean cut guy got in the other guys Tempo by mistake because his key worked in it. He was wondering why there were Copenhagen chew spit bottles in his car.
