Hey Mark, I didn't necessarily want the muffler but the straight pipe was not included in the exhaust I picked up off eBay.
My exhaust says it has the "hi-flow" muffler, so my new question is how much more restrictive is the "hi-flow" muff than straight pipe? Is it more of a sound thing or what's the straight scoop?
Josh
If you can look through the muffler with nothing in the way at all, such as what MBRP sends with theirs it should not be very restrictive. But if it is not a clear shot through, sure it has restriction.
Well I guess that answered my question haha! Where I live if the gvw is over 5000 lbs you dont have to go threw the emmissions test and is exempt, so out goes the muffler and cat then!
So then do I just put a pipe in to replace, dump it out the side or go with stacks?
Lisa has the best answer/solution - check about your local emissions regulations first!
If you get a visual inspection, and their little book says there should be a cat, you better look like you have one.
Say you don't check, just skip it, and straight-pipe it - then you get inspected and fail - then you might not be able to get new tags until you fix the problem (replace the missing kitty) - how much luck do you think you'll have finding a used kitty.... oh yeah, IT'S ILLEGAL TO SELL USED CATALYTIC CONVERTERS!!!
So now, you're screwed. You spend ~$400 for an exhaust, and then have to take it off, buy a new kitty (~$400+) and get another exhaust put back to accomodate the kitty.... Whereas just gutting the kitty is pretty much free and keeps you (visually) legal
It's like woodworking or any other project: "measure twice, cut once"

After all my typing, you turn out to be exempt!!! GACK!!!
If you use your bed alot, skip the stacks. I think the mitre cut 5-inchers look SWEET, but I use a hardcover or haul stacks of hay, so no stacks for me (until I buy a dually!!!)
I'd still put a muffler on if you live in, or often drive in residential areas. I bought an MKO system off ebay and got it with the muffler. The muffler was a pass-thru like Markadeck described, so no restriction, but makes it more neighborhood friendly. Still gives a nice sound going down the road though!!!
I live in Canada and never heard anything about illegal to buy a used cat? And if I do have any problems down the road I have the old one. I do live in a residential spot but I cant imagine that the PSD cant be louder than my friends 5.9 cummins that has the staight pipe and that six cylinder drone.
I am debating the stacks as I like the function and I only put my dirt bikes in the back for camping, I would really like to do dual stacks but the price is turing me away for the whole kit.
So 3-4 lbs of boost just from that? Will that give me more computer problems in terms of too much boost at that point that the sensors overload, I make just under 20 lbs now.

I bought my stacks on e-bay...They were brand new and really nice...about 500 shipped...6" mitre cut and kit came with everthing I needed...that was about a year ago and they are still holding up great!
Anyway just bought a straight pipe today and took off my monster muffler from Banks...I'm not too sure I like it better...I'll have to wait and report more later...
I didn't think that the early 99's came with kat's ???
If your're looking for a cheap exhaust, my buddie just bought a 5" aluminized kit for his 02 350 crew cab long bed for 360 shipped on e-bay...arrived in 2 days from idaho to va.
I like the deeper tone of the Banks muffler on my 01'. The sound of the 7.3 without the muffler seems a little on the harsh side. Still hear that turbo whine, and its plenty of sound when I tow the Fiver.
How hard is it to remove the guts? My 4" system should be here this week, wanted the straight pipe but the muffler was included. I am wondering how much of a PITA to de-gut it?
Josh
Just run straight. Don't gut the cat. Save it in case you are forced to put it back on.
I was going to buy a delete pipe but the kit I got came with a 34" pipe that was for a CC LB. I have a SC SB so I didn't need that pipe. I cut it to 30", the same length as the muffler, and used it for the delete pipe.
I had a 5 inch system no cat but a straight through muff and it sounded so awesome. Some times I would open the back window just to hear it better. I just installed 5 inch stacks this week and I get the same great sound but louder and clearer than before. definatly wothe the money for me.
