Instructions needed on front axle u-joint replacement
Hi all,
Does anyone know how to replace a front axle U-joint? These are the ones in the knuckle end of the axle by the ball joints. I think I can get the u-joint apart, but what do I have to take apart first before I can replace the u-joint?
Guess what? You also get to replace the axle seals, dust seals and o rings. bfh and pry bars all around. while your in this far do yourself a favor and replace the ball joints. not meaning to be a smart @$@ but just did this myself it was a pita. Too long since last time and alot of little things did not go well. check out the super duty site on how to replace ball joints major help, and they show a neat little seal setting tool ( tried without it and screwed up a seal at $ 42 bad error in judgment) went to home depot and bought the pieces they recommend 8" piece of 1.25" pipe threaded on both ends one cap and on wall/ floor mount flange. grind down the flange to 3.75" and thread all pieces together this works real sweet and is also great for resetting the axle in the shaft one of the sponsers sells the ball joints and all seals for $263.00
Here is a link to the 2002 SD/excursion service manual. if you look under driveline you can select front drive axle and it gives you instructions on removal of the axle shafts, seals etc.

Thanks for the info. Would you be able to tell me the name of the sponser?
My bad it was not a sponser, but powerstrokeshop.com cost was $263.16 & $25.00 for shipping they also have a good price on fuel filters as I recall the ball joints were MooG greasables and the seals were ford oem The kit you want is the 99-04 super duty F250-350 complete ball joint kit W/ seals. good luck and really, getor make the driver.

If I was facing a U-joint replacement, I'd be looking up the possibility of replacing it with a CV joint. Someone here said that this was a possibility. Any repair is an opportunity for improvement.
