I lost my post...
I did toy with the idea of installing the smaller radio between my seat and the console on the console. If I go that route, I'll DEFINITELY need an external speaker. Also, another spot the smaller radio will fit is in the cubby above head. But, mounting and wiring it in there will take a bit of extra work. And, may still need an external speaker?
I removed the middle seat and installed a center console I got off ebay. Between the console and dash cup holders I ended up with <2" of room, not enough to get a cb in and open & close the cup holders.
So I removed the console, cut 2 pieces of 1/8" steel 4"x8", measured, maked, and drilled pilot holes every 1/2" and bolted the plates on the console rails. Set the console back on and moved it where I wanted it and marked the pilot holes I was going to use. Simply glue or set some spacers (use the alignment nubs as reference) on the marked pilot holes. Tomorow I will put the console back down and screw it down with some self tapping screws (don't have ones lond enough). I'll end up moving my console back about 2 1/2". I should have about 4" between the console and the dash cup holders, prenty of room to mount a cb or a 10 meter radio to the front of the console.
I have pics of the mounts but can not get them to load. I can email them if someone wants to see them.
I also had to trim the front left bottom of the console down by the mounting bracket, you can see where it's cut back from the factory you just have to bring it fwd more to adjust for you moving the console back.
When done I mounted a galaxy 55 to the console, flipped the cup holders down and have a little over an inch betwen the two.
It was a fairy easy mod and took 2-3 hours to do. I would recommend to any else trying this is to only move the console back 1" - 1 1/2", this will same you a lot of time trimming & cutting unless you need the room.
