My F350 automatic transmission has a problem! When I put it in reverse it makes a noise and then bangs when I start to back up plus ir chatters and slips. All forward gears are OK! What is this?

This has me a little upset my truck has less than 33000 miles on it and the truck has never pulled anything! It has been my baby it has a very good life. I do not use any programmers or anything I kept it stock. And now my trans is on the way out? I my not own this truck for long if it is the transmission. I was all worried about the head gasket problem.
Has the truck been in service over 3 years? If not, it's still in warranty. If so, talk to your dealer and see if they can offer any After Warranty Adjustment (AWA.) That's a program Ford has to help pay for out of warranty repairs. You're still under on mileage, and at least really close on time. Plus there was a problem with 2005 reverse clutches so they may be willing to help. It doesn't cost anything to ask.
Mark thank you for the help. I had the trans serviced and I also picked up an extended warranty through Ford. They told me I have a one hr. charge for diagnose and a $50.00 deductible. The clutches are bad I can feel them. Will the transmission need to be rebuilt now?
I hope Ford has a way to prevent this from happening again! This trans has not worked hard ever. I hope I can get more than 33000 miles on the next one. I do not read anything on the forums about people that have this problem.
Some of the early torqushift trannys had a problem with the planetaries coming apart. The pins that hold the planetary gears in place were swedged in place. The pins had a bad habit of working thier way out and grinding themselves away. You'll find metal shavings and your framerail filter will be filled with gray/silver sludge.
It usually starts out with odd shifiting and maybe the TC hanging up. You'll replace a solenoid or two because of metal contamination then all hell will break loose inside the trans. Eventually the pump will go out and you won't get enough line pressure to shift and hold the clutches.
The new gearsets are welded together and don't have those problems. In fact, Torqueshifts are now just as reliable as the old 7.3 engine. If only they could get the 6.0 to run right you'd have a heck of a good setup.
I'd take it to the dealer for a checkup. If you raise enough of a stink (and recently have a documented trans service by them) you might get them to pay for at least a portion, if not all of the bill.
How long ago did you have the service done? Did they use the correct Ford SP fluid?
I had it serviced and it did not show any metal or anything. The trans was flushed and the trans fluid was from the dealer it is expensive! I took out an extended warranty for 100,000 miles thank god. They told me the trans was out of my truck and they are braking it down to find what went wrong and then they will let me know. It is a big help when experienced people know what is going on to let people like me understand and get a heads up. Thank you everyone for your help at a time when my truck is down and I did not know what is going on.
I'm split, it's got to be either a broken snap ring or metal clogging a solenoid (from the forward planetaries).
While it's apart I'd have them change the forwared planetaries if they aren't the welded ones.
The trans feels better than it ever felt. I asked what was wrong with it and the reply was it is in need of replacement. I never got an answer. I was charged $50.00 for everything.
It was the snap ring! I called and asked for more information on what went wrong and the service manager told me that no codes came up so they dropped the trans pan and found the ring in the bottom of the pan. They flushed everything ,put on a new trans cooler and put on a new trans.
I have asked this question on all of the truck forums and this was the one that had the answer. This place has the best knowledge and good advise. Thank you for your expert advise. I get more information here than my Ford Dealer.
