? 272 vs. 292 ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Mar-02 AT 12:50 PM (EST)]Hello all;

I recently purchased a 1955 Crown Victoria (not a truck) with what I thought was a 272 engine, now I'm wondering how to tell the difference. Hope you can help.

1. Are there any visual differences between a 272 & 292 CI engine? Where would I find the numbers on the block? And where (what book or website) can I use to cross reference the numbers, if and when I find them?

2. I've been told the valve adjustments are .019, is that for both the exh and intake? Is .019 a hot or cold measurement?

3. I also read in another post that the valve adjustments are.017 (hot & running).

After posting I read more posts and looks like I have found all the right answers to question #1, but still need help with 2 & 3.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

? 272 vs. 292 ?

Sorry for the confusion all;

It appears my wife found the block number ECZ6015, just above the oil filter. Which I've found indicates we have a 292 CI in our 1955 Crown Vic.

Would appreciate any specs you can provide in regards to plug and point gap; as well as the previously mentioned valve adjustment.

Thanks again

Y-blocks run best with hot plugs (best use to be Champion F14s) set to .035. The points are adjusted to .015 or so to give a dwell angle of 27 degrees. The smaller the point gap the larger the dwell angle.

Setting the valves to .017 hot and running will work fine. Use a stepped feeler guage. Set the ignition timing where it runs best, probably about 8-10 BTDC.

The old ignition systems were designed for copper core ignition wires but will work adquately with carbon core wires. Consider putting in a Pertronix unit which eliminates points and works great with carbon core wires.

Good Luck
