I have 58 f-250.the vin numbers indicate its a 272 -2bc ,153hp but the tag in the glovebox rates it at 145hp. I also found out they change engines in midyear production which might indicate the difference between the rated hp between the 272 vs 292 . The vin # indicates it is a 57 eng . Was 58 the yr they came out with the 292 .Are there any physical differencs or are they dif internaly. Confused
Hi John,
272 or 292 would be determined by your vin number. This wouldn't help if someone swapped engines, but I remember seeing in another thread that your truck was completely original.
I'm a little confused on some of the info provided. The vin won't specify a '57 engine in a '58.
My info shows the 1958 272 V-8 having 181 hp @4400 rpm (gross), 153 hp @4100 rpm (net)
The 272 was used till mid production year 1958. It was at that time the 272 was replaced by the 292.
During the switch over, Ford experienced some supply shortage problems with the 292, and some 312's were substituted.
The 272, 292, and 312 are different internally, but share the same block.
If you can re-post your vin number and rating plate info, we might be able to help sort some of this out for you.
I was reading this and my vin# is F25C0R16161 read on the frame and the glove box reads the save vin# but the cert net HP on the bottom of the tag reads 146 at 3800 RPM. Can anyone explain.
i had the same problems with my numbers.they didnt seem to match.still not 100%sure what the problem is.i have to get a build sheet to straighten it out.this post reminded me of that.these guys will help you out.good luck.

just post your question on this y-block forum or they may see this and answer here
I might have an answer. This is the way I understand it. Gross hp is at the fly wheel and net is at the rear wheels.
Kenny's hp is 153 hp @ 4100 rpm
211s hp is 146 hp @ 3800rpm both net
The difference is the rpm the same engine at 146 hp at 3800 rpm may have 153 at 4100 rpm.

F25..........3/4 ton, conventional cab
C..............292 V-8
0...............1960 Model year
R...............San Jose assembly plant
16161.......Sequential production number
My book shows the 1960 292 to have "146 Certified net horsepower @ 3,800 RPMs." Just like your tag states.
Different year engines have different certified net horsepower.
Hope this helps.
You asked what year the 292 start of production was, it was produced for the 1955 model year and used in Thunderbirds and police sedans. It became available as an option for sedans in 1956.
