How many fuel filters and where are they???

Hi everyone...

I have just pickup up a used Excursion 7.3PSD and I am slowly going to use bio diesel in it. I am going to slowly break it in so to speak, by starting at B20 for a while and then moving up to a more Bio and less dino blend.

I know that I may have to change the fuel filter in the event that it becomes clogged... Now my question is... how many fuel filters does the 7.3 have??

I know there is the canister, coffee can one on top of the engine. Is there another one under the vehicle between the fuel tank and engine somewhere?? If so where is it??

Thanks

The one up in front of the motor is it. There is also a small screen in the fuel pressure regulator you may want to clean out as well.

Welcome to FTE. Unless there have been modifications done to the truck then the only filter is the one you already described. The fuel filter looking thing on the frame below the drivers seat is your fuel pump. If an aftermarket filter has been added it is most likely between the fuel pump and the fuel tank and should be easy to see.

I appreciate the info.
How does one clean that pressure regulator filter? Should I have someone do it for me or is it easy enough for a non mechanical person to do at home?

Thanks

I guess my lack of knowledge is showing here.
Why would one want an after market fuel filter installed?

Thanks

You can do some in tank mods that will 1) allow you to top off the tank quicker and 2) change how the fuel is picked up in the tank to minimize air bubbles entering the system. If this was done it involves removing the screen in the factory pick up tube inside the tank so a filter is placed before the fuel pump to prevent sucking large debris into the fuel pump.

They're called the Hutch & Harpoon mods.

There are 3 other filters but they are IN THE TANK. If you have done the ITP In Tank Kit mod, you will remove those filters. One is on the "foot" and the other two are in the mixing chambers.
