Hey im new to this site but a long time lover of all things ford any how me and an old buddy are having the classic argument of which is better ford or chevy anyways he told me that his 3500 duramax allison can out tow a f450 with the cat option he says the whole truck is a joke and many people have had problems with braking suspension, braking the axles and so on and so forth and that he chevy is simply a much better work truck can you guys help me out?
i could be wrong... but a 1 ton Ford is rated for more weight than a 1 ton Chevy, so the 450 is going to be rated much higher...and the Cat option is only available in the 650 and higher. and since when is IFS stronger that a solid axle?
I would be afraid the torsion bar suspension would break on the GM truck. The only thing the GM truck has going for it is the power train. The ugly design and rusty sheet steel are not a good selling point. GM screwed up years ago making such rust buckets. So that is forever etched into my mind. GM trucks are rusty messes. And using our,, ah my wifes 84 Dodge truck as an example, Mopar has the worse body of all the manufactures. Power train is okay. Ford has the ah lower end powertrain but the better body. I guess because,I have read about all the tauruses and their bad transmissions. Though the E4OD seems to hold in there. I think Ford could do something better than just offering an IH diesel engine, though with the prices now who wants one?
Has Chevy even been able to make a 1 ton with a SRW yet? IIRc Dodge finally does but both them and chevy had duallys for a long long time to be able to make a 1 ton truck. I can't remember the rating for a 450 but I have easily had 25Klbs behind an '05 F350 SRW, I wouldn't be afraid to have 35K behind a 450.
yep all you guys make a lot of sense ill have to look in to the cat motor a little farther cause i have heard from a few people that it is available as a special option but even if it isnt what is your opinions of the current intertrashable and i heard there is a 6.7 coming out soon compared to the duramax
My 450 is rated at 14,500 GVW and a 5th wheel tow of 24,000 and a combined weight of 33,000. The Chevy web site lists the Silverado 3500 HD with a max trailer weight of 16,500, a GVW of 11,400 and a combined weight of 23,500.
if you dont mind how much was your truck im asking cause it is a dream of mine to own a 450 when i get out of school and also what do you think about the truck and its abilities pretty much pros and cons!
What I would like is an F550 with a supercab. I just don't care for the looks of crew cabs. I saw an F650 with a super cab today, nice looking trucks.
I suppose the only way to get one would be a chassis cab and add the box yourself huh?
not quit sure about that but you must do a lot of work with your truck because i would consider a truck that big to be to much for day to day acivities unless you were doing some serious work!

You said it all, My 450 pulls our 5ver extremely well. On an emergency stop it is incredible. Coming down the Pocono Mountains in Pa a BMW broke a front tie rod and spun out. everyone was locking up on the brakes, My 450 towing our 5ver slowed down as fast as traffic, I could not believe how well. I would say it stops 30% better than my 350 did. Off of traffic lights in the city it keeps up with traffic towing close to 17k also. I would love to line up with a Chevy or Dodge towing from a set of lights, it really pulls strong.
One of the main reasons I went with the 450 was the brakes. I didn't realize the 250 and 350 had the same size brakes but when I discovered that it made the decision fairly easy.
thats hella cool hopefuly in a couple of years i wil be able to afford one i think it is one of the best looking trucks i have ever seen and it definetly looks a lot better then the competion for sure plus it seems pretty capable doing hard work so its two thumbs up for me thanks for your input!
