Found last year our bikes bounced around alot when I went over rough bridges. Made me real nervous having that much weight acting like a seesaw.
I made a wooden template and am having it made into 1/4 plate steel with a receiver angled up a little for the bike tires to clear the truck roof on turns.
Can click on my gallery for larger pictures. This should take the cantilevered weight off the back and put the weight on my pin instead of the trailer axles.
hey Firehawk, you may get some rubbing damage on the front of your 5er . I know of 3 alternatives, 1. mount a 2x2 receiver under your front bumper and use the rack on the front of your truck. 2. get a roof carrier for your bikes or 3. you can get a $150 bike carrier (get a good one, you get what you pay for) for a car that attaches with straps to the trunk and bumper. Ive seen it put on the front of trucks pulling trailers, these might be better ideas than having something fabbed up. Gorgeous truck by the way, how do you like it?
hope this helps
I think you have a good idea there, but like James said the way you have it there it might rub. You could just lower it and move it ahead a bit to get a little more clearance.

Thanks for the ideas. I did look at the idea of the bike rack in the front. Tried to find a bike roof rack. No one makes one for the Super Duty because of the way the roof rails are designed. Even looked into making a stake rack to extend over the roof. When the 5ver swings at a 45* angle it is only about 4 inches from the cab. My design is adjustable so I can keep it about an inch from the front of the RV. Being made of 1/4 plate steel with reinforcing at the joint it shouldn't flex? It hasn't been made yet so I think I will have him add some more clearance. Love my truck for towing see link below for details last summer. I was able to keep it off the Salty roads this winter and used our Escape most of the time. With Diesel prices have been peddling to the Gym and driving the Escape more. The only problem is when I go back to my truck I find myself driving 15mph over the speed limit. It is like sitting on your living room couch watching Tv. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...5-1-miles.html
Hey FireHawk, I don't know if it will flex or not but you know as well as I do the head winds that you come across out there, as well as bumpy roads that would put any kind of carrier to the test. I would really consider the kind of space that you leave there. The last thing that you would want is for the front of your 5vr to get banged up. Hope I'm helping

Did you look at Yakima and Thule racks?
I believe I have seen a couple superdutys with racks on the roof.
I have the roof rails from an Excursion and I plan on trimming them to length and installing them on my roof so I can carry kayaks.
They make a front bike rack for a 5ver, I have the TT version. You can find information at : fifthwheel

Thanks rcracerx, nice fifthwheel front bike rack for the 5ver. Darn wish I had known. Just got my custom made rack back last night. Matched it up to my 5ver. Should work out real well. Will paint it up tonight and post some pictures when it is up. Thanks for your help. Maybe your link can help someone else.
Below is final bike rack receiver from the back to the front. The plate that bolts to the pin box is very strong. Added a bar with hooks to also stable the bike rack from swaying back and forth. will use the nylon adjustable straps. Made the receiver angled upwards for extra clearance when the bike wheels go over the cab during turns and when the truck dips on hills.

Reason: add picture
all bikes loaded for Memorial weekend. Note, our dog camper in the back, it has a skylight and sunroof cover for when we travel with our lab. Had to use some foam to block off heat coming up behind the cab to the truck bed. We open the back of the sliding window to give him some air conditioning too.
