Well Ford endorses them LOL.. they're called Mazdas. Grab a ranger, focus, etc.. and walla.. pretty sure they must have an all aluminum setup in one of these by now. My 02 Ram is a aluminum gig I think. But the local machinists don't speak to highly of these things. Great when new, but once the taper starts the rest of it just follows suit. Hearsay ? dunno, but he has his hands full with them.......
The neighbor has a 4 seat sand rail built off a VW, that he cruises in. He said that he would feel better on long trips if he had a better engine. Heck, the one on it is new rebuilt. His brother is talking about using a crate V6 Vortech on a new rail. He thinks that engine is alum, but he would prefer to have a Ford engine if the weight could be managed.

The gal who ran our phones at work has a son who has one of these with a Cadillac Northstar engine. Cant imagine it's very economical but he says it's got ***** to spare and reliable as hell. On the type of setup with a 4 banger, while at the machine shop yesterday. The guy was showing me "ok I was being nosey" a Mercury Marine (Chevy) 4banger that was being setup to run in a tract car looked like an old 32 ford coupe. They had modified a Hillborn setup for a married intake exhaust setup and it was to have a hand made mechanical tach getup. I'll see if he'll let me get some picts of it. Looked pretty cool.
If he wants a more powerful reliable light engine, tell him to throw a Subaru engine on it. The EJ22 and EJ25 come in SOHC and DOHC version, there are bell housing adaptors to bolt them to the VW transaxle, and they fit in just a slightly larger space than a VW engine.
Either that or he should be unique and put a Deutz air cooled diesel on it.
Is Mercruiser the only Ford 4 or V6 aluminum engine?
John
The only Mercruiser engine I know of that has an aluminum block is the 470 series of engine. Mercruiser designed a 4 cylinder using 460 rods and pistons with no offset wrist pins and an aluminum block with sleeves and a 460 cylinder head. But then an aluminum block requires a fresh water cooling system, antifreeze in the engine with a heat exchanger (water cooled radiator).
