What to do with a 352

I don't know alot about FE blocks, never having had one, but I might have a 352 comming my way, and I was curious if I could turn it into a 390? Is it as easy as swapping cranks/boring?

A 390 is the motor I want to put in my Mustang, so this would just be a great option, if I can do it.

If not, oh well.

Yep you can easily bore the 352 4.00 bore to 4.05 std 390. Add a 390 crank, rods, slugs and yer good. You'll have to see what heads come with it. Some only have the 8 bolt vertical exhaust pattern. They may or may not have the extra meat and bosses to drill them for the 14 bolt pattern. Once you get the 352 post what numbers the heads are. If they have the 8 bolt pattern you can run Hooker 6114 headers. Lil tight at the shock towers but certainly doable. The GT or CJ ex manifolds won't bolt up tho with only the 8 bolt pattern.

Yeah, should have mentioned that. It's a '69 Coupe.

I'm just wondering if I should offer my boss something for the 352. It's comming out of his old pickup (I want to say a 64 or a 66) and a nice little 360 is going in. Didn't want to make a offer if it didn't turn into a 390...

I had rather have the 360 to make a 390 out of.

Don't think that'll happen. The 352 has lots of miles, leaks, dirty, etc. Needs rebuild, pretty much. The 360 was rebuilt, or has at least had some work done to it. No leaks, Performer 390 on top, etc. Doubt my boss would let me have that one

What makes a 360 better to turn into a 390 than a 352?

Nothing really other than the 360 block is already bored to 4.05 or over. Some have the reinforced crank saddle and webbing. But other than that they were both cast with the same wallcores making the 352 in esscence a underbored 360/390.

Oh and if he's your Boss he's already making good money off you and should give it to you as a bonus.

I doubt any 352 came with other than the vertical exhaust bolt pattern. Of course it is possible the heads were replaced. But I would bet they were vertical too.

jmo unless you are going to make a 400+ hp firebreather, I'd stick with a 302/351w in a Mustang. While the FE will fit in that year, it adds lots of road hugging weight to the front wheels.

ymmv

Yeah and I think you could build 2 really nice 302's for the price of an OK -FE

Another popular thing people are doing is the late model 5.0 EFI and T-5 swap. Price won't break the bank either. I agree with Redman the cost of these engines and parts is just getting a bit old on the wallet. They are great engines and all but these prices are wearing me down. Add in the price of gas too......LOL. I used to buy big block Mustangs for $100-300 back in the 70's when no body wanted the gas guzzlers. Your lucky to find a aluminum FE intake for that these days.

why not start with a 390? there even easier to find than a 352, plus they dont have the funky 352 heads, if hes worried about price why not go with a sbc 350? in other words go with what you want, id do a 390 too, then id swap a 428 crank in there. nice thing about 390s is you dont really have to build them to get massive power.

I dropped an 85 HO in a 72 fastback, "woke that biatch up thats for sure". Rode a lil high in the front but I liked the look.
