I would like to know how difficult it is to upgrade to a doul resivior, on a 1953 F1. and if you give an approxemate cost for the materiols to do so. My single res, is frose up tight.
Assuming you have stock brakes all around you would first need to find a MC made for drums all around. I believe a MC from a late 60s Mustang would work. You can't use a MC made for discs/drums. Also you need to be sure the MC you use is for manual brakes and not for power brakes unless, of course, you plan to change to power brakes. You can make a plate to make the newer MC bolt in place of the original. The cost is well worth the upgrade. My guess is you could do it for $50-$100...
You may also need an adapter to put the MC on the frame rail too. I bought one for my '51 from Sacramento Vintage Ford. It was around $60 and lowers the MC down an inch or so and steps it out from the frame a couple inches. It also came with an adjustable push rod so you can get the correct length. There was another (cheaper) kind that was just a plate that had holes to match your frame and holes to match the MC, but it keeps the MC tucked up into the crossmember. The stepped down one is easier to check fluid with.
For what it's worth, I know a lot of people here have converted to discs and power, but this is the only mod I did to my brakes with the mustang drum/drum/non-power cylinder, and my truck stops just as well as my 06 Explorer. I don't have a lot of hills or mountains to experience the brake fade that drum brakes are known for when hot, but I'm very happy with the set up.
