Closed knuckle dana 44 stubs shafts are stronger than newer styles due to the axle shaft not having the tapered down section right before the splines. I've had my fair share of shearing axles clean right at the narrow section with a heavy foot big tires and a welded diff. You can make those axles work in 76-79 dana 44's but you have to take some material off for clearance in spindle bearing, grind ujoint cap ring holder, tack weld caps to keep them in, and grind top and bottom excess ball joint thread for clearance for axle to clear. I did this and it was a HUGE improvement. Only problem is the axle doesn't seal to the tube for water to get in.
