Could probably run a 37/38 pretty reliably with as light as the rangers are. I know a lot of jeep guys swap in the explorer 8.8 because its strong enough for them and has disc brakes.
But if I were going through all the trouble to SAS a ranger I'd probably just go right for the one ton stuff and never worry about it again.
From what i understand a D44HD is just a d44 with D60 outers for the 8 lug rims and bigger brakes.
Nope...
just the brakes. D44HDs only share rotors and calipers with D60s. Nothing else is the same.
Like I said...there is nothing HD about a D44HD.
For a trail truck on 38-40s with a 460 you'd be an idiot to SAS a D44. 60 rears arent the best either for that combination. Id go with a 60F with a 70 or Sterling rear.
A HD dana 44 hub is way bigger then a regular 44 hub that you might find in a F150. Believe me, I have one in my 75 ford. Axle shafts are the same diameter but the u joint is a litter bigger. 5-86x
My warn hubs in my 79 F150 were the exact same part number for the D44HD in my 79 F250. 5-860X is a D60 U joint.
Im not trying to be cocky with you bud but you cant beat me on most Dana knowledge. Lets just say Ive done my fair share of reading/watching/learning/building/breaking/fixing
Top shaft is a 5-86x u-joint style axle shaft, bottom is a 5-297x style shaft.
If only this heavy duty 5-86x u-joint axle shaft would fit in a Ball Joint Dana 44.
