I'm looking for some inspiration for my F450. I'm going to ditch the passenger box soon, and flat deck it for sure. Beyond that I'm still up in the air. I'm aiming for something to use as a welding truck, but with so much space out back, I can do something more than the usual, I'm just unsure what exactly.
So far a jib crane or HIAB unit is my big wish.
Absolute musts are good, lockable storage boxes (I can make the frames, and have them skinned by the sheet metal class at my school), bottle storage bunks, and some sort of covered parking for an engine driven welder. For the latter, I think I'll keep the utility box on the back, as it's dimensionally perfect (minus the wooden chainsaw locker inside), and it houses the rear bumper, plate bracket, and signal lamps. I can section and hinge the side of the utility box to allow access to the control panel of whatever welder I end up with. (Lincoln Vantage 400, mmmmmmmmmmmmm)
Here's the truck now. Seems to be a long wheelbase, but I haven't measured, and don't know the differences between the long and short sizing anyway.
One suggestion, I've watched plenty of people try to work out of a utility box, and it's a pain to get to the stuff in the front. Depending on what all you will need to carry, look at the bed sliders for ideas. If at all possible think of everything you will need to carry and mock them up, draw out a 6x8" box in your yard and place things around until your happy.
Oh, yeah man, I want most of my boxes to open from the side, and be accessible from the ground. I've been the labourer who gets stuck pulling gear from those boxes, and it's no fun.
