you can do any and all the work yourself, but you have to get the inspection certificate passed by a certified shop. been there, done that. best thing to do, get it inspected by a reputable shop, give them their 90.00 but tell them you just want the write up... most of them will do that anyway. you have 30 days to get it fixed and inspected again or else you have to pay the 90.00 again.
I definatly agree that some vehicle inspection stations do take some things too far. I also agree that rust shouldnt be as big of an issues as it is, especially considering where we live. But there also has to be a set of guidlines so its fair to evertone.
Now when i say a beater running into me, from before, I was talking an mechanically unsafe beater.
I also say that anyone driving a beater probably does not want to put money into parts on the beater to keep it in tip top mechanical shape. There lies the problem.
I also agree with what Ryan said about drivers. Ive seen way more crappy city drivers that drive civic's, cavaliars, focus's, and the likes of that, they the guys that drive the older vehicles.
So far I have gotten 5 or 6 vehicles personaly through an inspection, and have helped with buddies getting another 10 or so through. Its not hard to pass a vehicle. Ive never had a problem, and Ive done all the work myself. Sherm is spot on with the way they work too.
The one shop did not pass my buddies ford escort due to rust, and all we did was bend up some metal, and tacked it on.
What i think they should do is have your vehicle pass a mechanical every year, and a structual every 3 years. Work has to be done a a sgi shop, and have it done on their dime, we pay them enough for registration and whatnot!
IF you get stopped and fail at a roadside check they should have a place where you can go to contest it, if you were honestly treated unfair, and there should be consequences for the inspector then.
Heh heh you wanna talk winshields NY? You should have a peek at the one in my 89!
It has a rock chick that is JUST about right through (thanks dad) a spider web from my buddy punching it (thanks dipsh17) and not to mention the cracks that go from one end to the other!
Its in pathetic shape, but kinda funny, I should snap a pic of it.
My personal opinion there are way too many ******* drivers out there, they cause more accidents then a farm boy driving a unsafe rusty 70 or 80's truck in the big city.
what about the city boy driving a unsafe rusty 80's farm truck in the big city
I called around and the cheapest i can get a winshield for is 300 bucks for my 89. Im holding out as long as i possibly can since i really dont use the truck much!
That would be installed?
I suppose it`s $200 for the windshield and $100 for the glue in kit.
Without install it was $120 for my 69 F100 on a cash and carry deal.
It`s pretty easy to install a windshield that`s in rubber so lockups and I did it.
That was bought at Speedy Auto Glass on 8th Street, it`s a pretty standard price I believe.
Rubber sealed windows are easy to install. The glue ones you have to be just right so the glass does not rub on any metal.
I was at a shop today for parts. they said the inspections are over on Tuesday. This year they did 2 weeks, usually only one week. They do another blitz in Sept..
If caught with burnt bulbs, usually all you need to do is fix it in 30 days, go to your local police with the warning paper and show them it has been done. Exhaust work they rather see a bill from the shop.
As you said prep about taking it to a shop gets really expensive fast. That is the problem they have in BC and Ont. where shops are taking advantage of people and unneccesary repairs or through the roof costs. They know you have to have it done in a certain time and stick you.
W5 Has shown programs on this happening there. Good thing was they found very few shops here that did that, but it would not take long for those shops to pop up.
