technically any rust toonie size or bigger will cause a failure. i don't agree with that. many people drive beaters because they can't afford anything better... there's got to be different rules made that make better sense...

I agree - thats crap. I can see once rust becomes bad enough to affect structural integrity but small surface rust is no reason for failure. The things they need to focus on are tires, brakes, lights, exhaust, suspension, and structural integrity.

absolutely. i know guys who's trucks would run around the world and back, but they look a little on the rough side... they wouldn't pass an sgi spot check for any money, but mechanically and structurally they're sound. i know a guy with a '00 chebby that the truck looks like new, but his front end was so shot a 80km/h ride was super scarey... i'll lay money on the table that it would pass before the older one...

Lack of common sense and proper training training you might say.As stupid as this sounds I am not making this up, this did actually happen to my neighbour last fall.

If your cab isnt rusted out then that shouldnt matter right?

Realistically how bad was his rust? Was that the ONLY problem?

I agree with ya guys that they should look after the mechanical aspects over the cosmetics. I havent personally heard of them yanking a vehicle off the road for minor rust either though. The times I have heard of it, the rust was fairly bad.

I also dont think that just because a beater is all you can afford, means that it should be on the road. I would rather have less unsafe beaters driving around and more people walking/biking. And most of the time its a beater with SOME rust, thats not the biggest problem. If you cant afford a better car, you most likely cant afford to keep it in tip top shape.

Just think if an unsafe beater crashed into you. Would you say oh least im glad he had something to drive, or would you say the damn thing shouldnt have been on the road anyways?!

If you cant afford a safe car, you can hopefully afford a safe pedal bike

My sister got caught in a check stop with her 98 Cavalier. They nailed her for condensation in one of her front signal lights.... unbelievable.

Ryan with your sister, first, is she hot?

Jokes, thats retarded though, unless the headlight didnt work, I think thats pushing it. Same with small minor rust, it shouldnt matter.

These spot checks get carried away. I know someone who had his truck fagged for an inspection for a hole the size of a loonie. He had to get it fixed and go through a full inspection before getting it back on the road.
I even saw guys who haul scrap iron ahve beat up trucks, that are mechanically sound on brakes and such. The one guy ended up using his new ford truck afterwards and was soon wrecked from hauling scrap iron.
The inspections do over board and on the other hand they take some bad cars off the road. There are a lot of cars that pretty rusted. But picking on a car that shows the person has been keeping it safe mechanically. Don't pick on him.
If they did yearly inspections of all vehicles before plating.there will be a lot of people walking. I been in the shop where an inspection was being done on a brand new truck from another province. It did not pass.
A yearly inspection would become another money grab by the government.
Now if an beater ran into you, it would of been the same if it was not a beater, The person driving the car ran into you do to not watching.
Inspections are great, but they incorporate the highway act on the safety. Which is why a lot of cars do not pass. They have water in the headlight.as an example.
BC and Ont. have mandatory inspections and a lot of shops have run amuck at failing vehicles to do unnessesary work. THe APA has caught these businesses, but the government does little to stop these bad businesses, due to lack ofman power to shut bad shops down.
When I was a kid. I remember they use to hold voluntary inspections. My dad use to go and they align your headlights and check your brakes at no cost or penalty.
Also these inspections also give you a paper to have certain things fixed on your car in a month, like burnt bulbs or leaky exhaust. Then you go to the police station to show the receipt for work done. Doing it yourself does not count. Once this is done, then the tag for repairs is lifted.
They usually only pull cars that have something very wrong with safety to drive, but yes you can get an overzelous jerk sometimes or one on a power trip.

My point exactly, it could be a good thing but too often it`s way over board.

My personal opinion there are way too many ******* drivers out there, they cause more accidents then a farm boy driving a unsafe rusty 70 or 80's truck in the big city.

I try to keep my vehicles mechanically sound with good tires, brakes exhaust. Just because my truck seat is tore should not be a reason to pull it off the road.( seat and exagerasion). Certified inspections get stupid when they won't pass your car because it is missing a mudflap. They say it should have two on the rear or none, you cannot just have one.
I took my Grandfathers car in with only 35,000 miles on his 74 after an accident. They would not pass the car because the seat belt had fuzzy's on it, claiming it was fraying. The material was not fraying, just fuzzy from going in and out of the slider. All we did was take a bic lighter burned the fuzzy's off and it passed. No frays anywhere.
