advice on elec. fuel pumps?

Any advice on a good electric fuel pump that will suck more gas out of these dang dual fuel tanks?

85 F150, orig. 300/6 with mech. pump, it's now a 95 302HO with surpintine system and I have to have an electric pump.

Problem is I can only get 1/2 tank out of the rear tank before it runs out of gas, and 3/4 of a tank out of the front tank. I've pulled both tanks twice, replaced both "socks" and still have the same problem. The truck is runnin now on a chicken s**t Purolator transformer lookin noisy thing. I tried a Carter 4070 and can't get it to run from a standstill. I have a new Carter AFB I've adjusted every which way but loose, bigger jets, metering rods etc.

Real pain this is. I guess I need a pump that will suck Moby ##### thru a keyhole.

Thanks,
Moe

LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-00 AT 10:14 AM (EST)[p]Hey Moe.Have you made sure the "socks" are down in the tanks far enough??They should be about 1/2 inch from bottom.I would also check the rubber fuel lines, are they soft and sucking shut?I think the electric pump has a higher CFM.Does engine act like its starving for fuel when tanks are full? No "in tank" pumps, the orig. 300/6 used a mechanical pump and it had a "feedback" carb. I was going to change to in tank pumps but I'd have to replace both tanks as well. ($$$$$$) Socks are very close if not on the bottom. Could a bad canister or check valves (the little dodads on top of the tanks with the small line from the canister) be plugged up? they both seemed ok when I pulled the tanks.

See Ya,
Moe

I have read that electric pumps push much better than they suck, so they are supposed to be mounted as close as possible to the fuel tank. On a dual tank setup this is kinda difficult. You may have to see if it is possible to retro fit the in tank pumps to your tanks, seems as tho I read something about this on this site within the last few days.

I called Ford Racin about the "in tank" fuel pumps and they told me that I'd have to replace the entire tank. I then called a junkyard and they wanted $300 for front and rear tanks with used pumps. After thinking about it there is a fuel return line going back to the tanks. (possible PITA) I meet a guy the other day that came over to pickup some old furniture and he was a mess. (skin was melted and discolored) I asked him what happened and he pointed at my truck and said "You better be careful, I had dual tanks on my truck and I was on fire before I knew it." It was a later model FI truck. Anyway, I'm not gonna mess with "in tank" pumps.

Thanks,
Moe

Moe,

Have you verified that the gas caps are vented, sounds like your pulling a vacuum on the tanks. They will work while there's no room in the tank for air, then as the fuel level goes down the vacuum begins to develop. The next time it does the starvation thing, try taking the cap off and put it back, then see if it'll run.
The other is the filter, is there one you haven't changed?

I guess I'll double check the caps, I swapped out the locking caps with the original caps awile back and it didn't help. I also replaced the vacuum line from the canister to both tanks...Could it be possible that the canister is causing a vacuum situation from the vent hose on the carb.? I don't see how that is possible, but heck I'm lost anyway...:-)

I've replaced both "socks" and I have 1 "see thru" up by the carb.
I'm gonna recurve my dist. tonite and check out the original gas caps.

Thanks,
Moe

I know that sometimes they put a pump in the tank as a low psi pump, just enough to pick it up to the high psi pump. That is how my 88 F150 w/5.0 EFI and my 86 2.3L EFI Ranger is.
