302 swap 74 into an 80 Ford 150 /oilpan with dipstick
Putting a 74 Ford 150 302 with 67,000 miles into a 1980 Ford Ranger 150
Had to spin oil pand around to work with 1980 cross member vs. 74 cross member and opposite deep ends of both oil pans 74 front, 80 rear
Had to swap exhaust manifolds
Had to address oil pump feeder tubes
Have to swap distributors
Of course the air pump option is history...
74 - oil pan dip stick went through timing chain cover.
80 - oilpan dipstick went through block at driver's side rear of motor.
Since I had to spin pans around I now need to figure out how to hook up a dipstick in the 80 truck with a 74 motor.
WANTED: 302 OIL PAN WITH DIPSTICK BUILT INTO PAN??
WHAT YEARS AND WHAT TYPE OF FORD 302 TRUCKS OFFERED THIS TYPE OF PAN that includes DEEPEST portion to REAR/transmission end
\????????????????????????????????????????????
It is a show stopper without figuring this out.
Thanks

Jim,
I replied to your other post about the oil pan, but missed the part about the dipstick in the pan. Why not weld a tube to the back of the pan in the location of the '80, that will locate it to clear the journels of the crank, and then measure the height of the tube on the '80 for the lenght. With the '80 dipstick you should have the correct reading on the dipstick. Add a fillet or two to brace the tube and it should work fine.

Have to think about that one. The 80 tube and dipstick went through the block. Not real sure how to maintain correct angle and dipstick reading when dropping down below the block and into the pan
??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Heard some 80's ford trucks had 302's with rear sump pans and dipsticks in pans.

Jim,
In order to use the 74 block you're going to have to do some kind on fab'ing to the oil pan, anything that is secure and allows you to get a reading on the oil level is what's required. The dipstick doesn't even have to go into the pan, it could drop down in a tube along side it, like a sight glass on the side of a tank.

I believe PAW has a large selection of Ford oilpans, also check www.oemfordparts,com. What you need is available from one of these places I'm sure.
