That little toy Smart car got 32MPG on a Car & Driver test. And...it uses premium fuel!
I have seen as much as 23 on a mixed tank..mostly highway....with my Cobra.
The Smart really doesn't make much sense for the city either as I see it. It might be easier to park...but you'll still have to feed the meter for a full spot!
I am now the proud owner of my dually because some lady ran a red light- I was driving eastbound in my 97 F-150 w/6" lift and brushguard on the front, doing about 45mph through an intersection when this lady made a left turn on a red in front of me (from west to south) in her 99 nissan altima. Well, I locked up my 33's, hit her just a little past the center of her two doors, more toward the rear door, knocked the car about 30 feet, I then proceeded to veer to the right (toward stopped traffic at a light headed north) where I took out the hood of a brand new International box truck, then glanced off it, totalling the Ford Escort wagon next to him, pushing the wagon into a nissan on his right. It was a freakin' mess- when I finally came to a halt, I unbuckled, got out, spit out the cigarette I still had in my lips (air bag never hit it) and went over the the car I hit. The driver was pulled out and only suffered a broken wrist and cuts to the head from bouncing around, but the passenger- that poor victim of her friends stupidity- had to be extracted with the jaws of life. For a time I didn't think she was going to live. Being a Marine I have no problems with having to kill in the line of duty, but it was pretty sickening to have almost killed this (again innocent because her friend screwed her) lady. Luckily, she survived but had a crushed pelvis, broken right leg, fractured ribs, internal bleeding in the brain, was in a coma for 3 weeks, and then had to endure I believe about 7-8 months of physical therapy. I really wanted to kick the driver in the face because of what she caused, but that woulda just been salt in the wound. I only got a slight friction burn on my thumb from the airbag, because I was laying on the airhorn right before we hit...
Long story short- I was glad to be in the truck, not the tin can foreign job!!
Whew, neither look all that pretty but I'd be willing to bed that nobody was seriously hurt in either wreck.
...snip
That's my take on the topic more in depth ^
I'd still rather be in a new SUV/Truck.

Ehh if someone was in the passenger seat of that prius you can bet they were seriously hurt. UNless he/she didn't really want their legs anyway of course.

Damn bro that's a tough deal... how old was the driver a kid or older lady?
I took a road trip last November from NC to MO in my X and got lots of dirty looks from couples in there hybreds and Honda Civics. Well I did the math. Sure I was only getting 16 MPG in my X , but I was moving 6 people comfortably not 2. That means I was getting net 48 MPG to move my load verse their lousy 38MPG for 2 ! For a big family an X is still the most cost affective way to move.
Regardless of what every body says, I see many good applications for the smart car. Many here in Silicon Valley (and many highly populated areas like it) have to manage a very short trip on regular basis to work and park in ever shirking street side lot! Besides, the speed is limited to 35MPH or less (i. e if you can get past the singles). It makes perfect sense to have something like smart car or Prius, or so assumed “tin cans”!
Hey, it is still safer than a motorcycle!!!
Wilson, both the women I would say were in their mid to late 30's. Thankfully, the baby seat in the back was empty- when I saw that, I swore my heart stopped- an adult is one thing, but a baby.....

Ive seen 30-32MPG in my 99 camaro with a 6 speed. Cruising at about 70-75 on the highway on a road trip. I have to run premium as well, but thats not bad for mileage considering the power and performance on tap! that double overdrive with a .50 final ratio is GREAT for mileage!
