Excursions vs SMART car

On Monday I went to my softball games as I do every week. This monday as I pulled into the parking lot I noticed one of those new SMART cars in the lot. It was nice and clean as if it was just purchased. So I pulled next to it and parked there for the evening. unfortunately I didnt have my camera with me to actually show the size difference between the two. Well as I started to walk towards the fields I just looked back and said to myself why? The chance of accident survival is slim to none if a side impact or any impact is to happen.

So after a couple of hours and two games later I was about ready to leave and ran into the woman who drives the car in the lot. So I started to ask her a few questions about it. She was nice enough to answer them. some basic questions as MPG, cargo space, and speeds. After a few minutes of talking to the lady I knew she just had no idea of what would happen to her in an accident. I didnt ask her what she paid for it cause thats none of my business, however she did offer that information of $16,000. I was shocked that anyone would pay that much money for a slightly oversiazed go cart. what do you think?

I'm with you, no way would I put myself or my family in one of these new little death traps,I do bodywork for a living and I have been fixing alot of the toyota prius lately, that's another death wish waiting to happen,I don't care If these cars get 1000 miles to the gallon you would not find me driving one.

1000 MPG? I would drive it. I would still keep the EX but I would drive a 1000 MPG car.

I agree that I could not drive one of those either. Life is too important to me for that aluminum foil made car. Yikes, I didn't realize they were that expensive either!

My son will be getting one of my SHO's for his first car. 4 doors, 3400 #'s, and I have seen many of them give their lives to save the person driving.

Just my .02

I have seen ratings on the smart car around 35mpg. You an buy much larger Honda Civics and Toyota Corrollas that get that kind of mileage.

I don't see any benefit to owning the Smart. I think some of the owners but them as a fashion statement.

I saw some pictures of a SMART car that had crashed into a 2 or 3 ton truck. It was not a pretty site. The SMART car driver was pulled out in halves. It was really graphic.

There's a video on googlevideo of a smart car hitting a barrier going about 70 mph. It faired no better than a regular car. It was pretty disturbing regardless.

smart car barrier - Google Video

That's the full one I believe.

My buddy's sister got t-boned two nights ago and she was in the hospital getting surgery on a crushed pelvis. She was driving a Sebring. Had she been driving something safer or bigger she woulda been fine. Now she has to do physical therapy for two years.

If I were out to save money on fuel, I'd get a TDI. IIRC, they get an honest 50 mpg. In this one, you might be in a safe area but the impact will rattle your brains and IIRC, that is NOT a good thing.

BTW, why didn't you steal that car? You could have folded the 2nd row of seats down and with the 3rd row off, the smart car could have fit in the Ex.

Sorry to hear about your sister... hope the best for her.

I would consider a SMART car... if we ever got the 3cyl diesel at 60 MPG. At least it would be safer than my motorcycle. Ehh... whadda we gotta live so long for anyway... I'll take the bike.

My last truck was a 2000 f-150 supercab, it was a nice truck! With my then 9 year old daughter in the front passenger seat we got t-boned by a lifted dodge truck that was probably going 40 to 50 Mph. The driver never saw us ... who the he** knows what he was doing, but he never hit the brakes. The impact was centered on the door next to my daughter. It shoved us about 40 feet to one side and flipped us on the lid. Upside down in a totaled truck my daughters first words were "DAD! ARE YOU ALRIGHT?" I said forget me, are you alright? She was!!!!! Thanks again to God and Ford in that order. We crawled out through the drivers side window which was now missing, and walked away unhurt ... I think I had a small scratch bleeding on one finger from crawling through the glass. She said "Dad, your truck!" I said forget the truck, we'll buy a better one ... and I think we have. Try that in a foreign compact!!!!!! Mike

Thanks Sanchez, it was my buddy's sister but I'll give them your best.

'03Ex, that's quite a story man. Glad to hear you guys are alright! I can only imagine what was going through your mind (and cycling south lol) when that happened.

Hey, nothing cycled south but a lot of glass, I think I didn't have time for that ... it all happened rather fast (LOL). Geez, but I remember picking glass out of my hair, shirt, pants, shoes and socks for the next several hours ... stuff ends up everywhere! Mike

Haha yeah I know the feeling. We T-boned a tree in my buddy's Mazda3 and I found glass in my jean's pockets! I was sitting down when it happened. I had NO idea how they got there lol. Then, the next day my brother picked a chunk of glass out of his North Face jacket's breast pocket and he asked how it got there. I was like, "I unnoo. "
