Me and my brother once pulled, completely rebuilt on the living room floor and reinstall a 3cyl Geo Metro engine in his Geo. No motor puller required, we basically just picked the motor up out of the car when we got everything taken off and walked away with it.
Wait til it gets out of tune, they hardly can do better than being pushed... Keep them in good shape, and they do ok, but as soon as they loose a little power, better have a hill to push it down to get going..
Amen to that! Back when I was about 16, my friend's mom had a Metro w/ a 3cyl auto. It was out of tune a bit and that thing couldn't move out of its own way. It was craptacular!
Sorry Jim, it appeared to be a poke towards Canada... I've had that a couple of other times on here, and it annoys the heck outta me..
I have a friend in Chilliwack BC, that has a 1991 Chevy Sprint 1.L Turbo, well now it is a twin turbo, with the heads bored and she now puts out 160hp and goes like a demon.
I didn't really mean to say these cars were gutless. They had adequate power for what they were intended to do, that being commuting. We took ours on a few road trips. Cramped? Yeah. They had their problems, just like any other car. Windows constantly falling out of the tracks. Door locks oxidizing so you couldn't get a key in the hole. All in all, a reliable, cheap car.
I have no idea what a car with an automatic drove like, ours was a 5 speed. But I have heard the automatics were slow as all get out. Our 5 speed was actually not that bad. Could easily keep up with the flow of traffic. Passing was iffy, especially passing an 18 wheeler. But I even got a couple speeding tickets in that thing, one I beat in court.
Does anybody know what is involved in replacing a Geo Metro 3cyl with the four cylinder engine?
My in-laws keep asking questions about their junk cars, like I know all about every little Daewoo or Suzuki on the planet-
They are better off leaving the 3 cylinder motor in it. I have one as a second vehicle, and with todays gas prices, I'm getting 45 plus MPG and the motor has over 300 thousand kilometers on it. That and they are easy to work on, 20 minutes to change the timing belt.
The three cylinder car has a good body, and bad engine- the front pulley came loose and trashed the nose of the crank. I'm not there, so I can't just fix it like I've done to other cars.
The four cylinder car is wrecked, but runs fine.
And these cars aren't cheap anymore, not with gas prices going up, and especially not in Southern CA where they are at.
I had an '87 Sprint that I paid $400 for in 1993. The carburetor went bad after three months, and they are NOT rebuildable. Couldn't find a used one, and dealer cost on a new one was over $600. Okay, that was $200 more than I paid for the CAR. I sold it to a guy who had a daily-driver Sprint, and needed a 3rd parts car. So much for "economy..."
