Why are the tuned 7.3's more desireable??

I have to ask. I was asking someone a while back about the 7.3 vs. 6.0 debate and was told by a few powerstroke gear heads that they would definitelay rather have a tuned 7.3 than a 6.0. I know it obviously takes more mods to make a 7.3 have the same HP as a modded 6.0. What's the appeal of the tuned 7.3. Does it have to do with the old addage that there is no substitute for displacement?
Thanks

I think that it is the proven reliability of the 7.3.

The 7.3 is not known by any stretch as the HP king of diesel motors, but it is know as the one that pulls the high HP motors to and from the track.
We were told a few times by both doge and chevy boys at Smokin' that the funny thing is, when they break down its always a 7.3 that pulls them home to get rebuilt.

The 7.3 has proven itself a reliable motor. However it is a bit sluggish. A simple tuner, gauge, intake, and exhaust package cures the suggishness giving you a great motor with a reputation of reliablity.

I wouldn't trade my tuned 7.3 for any other motor on the market.

So even after the 6.0's had their kinks ironed out, I guess you all would still have a tuned 6.0? Why don't you hear of alot of heads bieng replaced on htese 7.3's or is that one more thing wrong with the 6.0's?

It's not the heads that fail on the 6.uh-ohs. It's the head gaskets (especially on tuned 6.0s!). They also have EGR issues, turbos issues, intake gasket issues, and some injector issues, too. They were supposedly fixed in '05, but my buddy's '05 has had all of the things done to them that failed in the earlier ones, except the EGR. He has had intake gaskets, injectors, turbo, and head gaskets replaced under warranty. However, he drives the $#!t out of his truck, so it may just be that they start having problems at about the 400/700 mark (where he's at right now). All he has is an Air-Raid intake, MBRP 5" exhaust, and a BD Triple Dog tuner. He dynoed at 392/701, IIRC.

That's what would would really stink is too have all those problems after you cross the warranty threshhold. Last I talked about the 400 mark in a 7.3, it was going to take a set of sticks and a turbo. Def. more $ than the 6.0 but I guess that at the end of the day, you would have a 400 hp truck that would be relaible.

That's right, but don't go much above 400 unless you have forged rods (you might in your 2000). My goal is to go with a set of SS sticks and a modified turbo. That should put me between 350 & 400, and I'll be happy with that.
