in dash voltmeter and temp guage don't work....Where is the temp sender on the engine ? and where do you think I should look for the volter meter problem?
I would take the cluster out and clean the contacts first before assuming that it's a sensor problem. You may also just have a loose connection at the main plug.
Disconnect the temp sensor wire at the sensor and ground it with the ignition in the run position. If memory serves me right the sensor on the 4.9 will have a single push on red/white wire and be located at the lower driver side on the front of the block. If you ground the wire and it swings all the way to hot, the wire and gauge are working fine and the sensor is bad, If the gauge doesn't move when grounded, it's a wiring/connection/gauge problem. Start with cleaning the connections as Stosh suggests.
The voltmeter is a little trickier, but I would start by cheking the gauge itself. It has two metal pins that go through a plastic sleeves that secure it to the cluster. These plastic sleeves are notorious for breaking. Also, check your altenator wiring for loose or broken connections.
Every 4.9 six I have ever seen have the temp sender located at the back of the engine at the firewall on the passenger side of the block under the exhaust manifold.
The ammeter problem is another problem. Is the system charging OK otherwise?
That's probably true...as I said I was going from memory at the time and it's been a good 3 years since I've owned a 4.9, and that one was much newer. The test process doesn't change though.....
Temp sender located at the back of the engine on the passenger side, just as Holmesuser said.
Circut #39 Red/white stripe wire.
there are three conections for this wire.
Connector #208 at the instrument cluster P.C. board.
Connector #325 at the driver side fender.
And of course, Connector #310 at the sender.
The voltmeter is actually an Ammeter, and is quite different in operation to a voltmeter. Start the truck and watch the ammeter, and rev the engine. If it moves toward the charge side slightly it is working. Turn the heater blower, headlamps on etc, and if it moves toward the discharge side, slightly, it is working. The ammeter does not read very much off the center of the gauge, unless something is wrong, like a dead battery, or bad altenator. So if you don't see it move, but only slightly, then that is normal.
