erratic temp display and auto temp malfunction

For the last year they dash display on my 2004 F150 5.4L 4x4 has been extremely erratic. All winter it has displayed an outside temp of anywhere from 96 to 112 degrees even when it's below zero outside. Also (possibly related) at the same time this started, my cabin auto temp control quit working correctly. I can adjust the temp and fan, but it won't control the temp automatically. Is there a temp sensor outside the cabin somewhere that needs replaced? Where is it? Any ideas that it might be some other problem

Thanks for any help or ideas.

There is an outside sensor for temp. I'm not real sure where it's at, but I think it's around the radiator somewhere. I think they run about $80 from Ford. If you can get to your local library, you might be able to check out the Ford shop manual and it'll tell you exactly where it's located and how to run diagnostics on the EATC system.
