@#$% Exhaust Manifold Studs

I am having some serious work done on my '99 F250 V10. Today the shop showed me that only 6 of the 20 studs that hold the exhaust manifolds on came out in one piece. What is amazing is that there was very little exhaust leak noise upon startup which went away when the engine warmed up. These were definately under engineered although they did last for 8 years and 83K miles. They are being replaced with the new Ford alloy studs. I guess that is one of the perils of buying a new engine design the first year it is out.

Your stud issue is not just related to the '99 V10 2v, but all the '99-'04 V10 2v engines.

Very common...

Glad to hear that you are getting them replaced and NO more problems.

Do you mind posting what you had to pay for all the studs to be replaced?

Sorry I can't give you a price right now. I am having a ton of other work done right now including replacement of the (dreaded) sparkplugs, new KYB adjustable shocks, a new starter, new pitman arm, complete tuneup, new hoses and belt, complete fluids change including ABS fluid, install of a tranny temp gauge and a rear end upgrade from the 373s to 430 including adding a gear driven posi. The truck will be used primarily going forward as a tow vehicle for my 7500# travel trailer. I was given an estimate of $4,000 for everything. When I get the final bill with the breakdown, I'll post the cost of this repair here (if I remember).

OK I just paid the bill today and got my truck back after 2 weeks. For the complete manifold job, it cost me $1,050. That included the 20 new studs and nuts, gaskets, 6 drill bits, 2 stud extractors,10 helicoils, and milling of the manifold surface. First I am glad it is done and second I am glad I wasn't the one to do it. I went by every day to see the progress and was painful to watch what they had to do. It was worth every penny to me. They were going to charge me time and materials but they cut me a break of about $400 on account of all the other work I had them do as well. The above price includes the discount.

That does sound like a lot of work...and the $1,050 does reflect that. Nice fo them to give you a $400 discount too!

Sure wish FORD could solve the problem. I think better splash shields would be the best thing. Keeping the manifold bolts from rusting in the first place would eliminate the problem all together.

Just my .02

Actually Krewalt has posted the real reason why these studs rust and break. Too small a diameter stud, long exhaust manifolds that expand and contracr with the heat and the nuts rusting to the manifolds.
