Power steering????

Could someone explain why the power steering pump hooks to the brake reservoir? In what way does the power steering pump work with the brakes? I’m trying to understand why my power steering quit working the other day and now it’s fine. What do you call that valve that controls the pressure in the line and is it found in the gearbox? I’m wondering if it was stuck and that could have casued me to lose my power steering.

the brakes a hydraulic assist that work off power steering pump,there should be a pressure deversion valve that defaults to steering
