Can I drive my F250 w/out the power steering pump working? I know it'll be tough to steer, but my question is more about my beloved truck. Will I hurt the truck by driving it - just to get it home and replace the pump? (Unfortunately, I'm about 50 miles from home.)
Anything tricky about replacing the power steering pump I should know before tackling the job?
Won't hurt the steering. You might not even notice it gone while moving.
The brakes are the rough part. The power steering pump runs the hydroboost brake booster. It will be considerably more difficult to stop. Not impossible, mind you, but the pedal will be MUCH more stiff. But as long as you can "plan your stops in advance," you should be good to at least get it home.
Depending upon exactly what went wrong, you may have to worry about extreme aeration in the system once you get the pump replaced.
I've never had to do it, but I was told once that in this instance, the fastest way to purge the system is to raise the front wheels off the ground, and slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth, lock-to-lock, while idling.
Given that the brake booster will be aerated as well, I'd imagine that a few slow, deep pumps of the brake pedal would be in order as well.
Again, thanks. Once you told me that the PS pump runs a hydroboost for the brakes, I called my favorite mechanic... this is no time for OJT for me. I don't want any problems, especially since I'm towing my camper this weekend.
