If you are running a stock turbo, I think 22psi is just fine. Just FYI, my rig is on 35" tires with a DP chip, TN BB turbo with a Spearco IC, and when I pull the I-70 Westside of Vail Pass going east, on the 80 econ setting in overdrive, my EGT's vary from 1150 to 1250 during the whole pull UP the pass. Empty, the truck never shifted from overdrive. I personally don't think you have any problem, but that is my opinion, because I, too, live at high altitude(8000ft).
Maybe that's it. My idle temps seem to be pretty consistent with everyone else's. I never get below 280* in the 80 econ tune though. I don't care how long it sits. I get a HUGE cloud of black/white smoke when I barely get on it too. Also think my truck should be faster than what it is. I'll go out and look for soot I guess? What do you make of a "squeaky" wastegate at part throttle? Sounds like its opening/closing repeatedly sometimes.
Sounds like you have a bad case of surge... ATS Compressor housing, a WW or a 1.00 exhaust housing are all good fixes for surge. You will NEVER hear the wastegate open on a stock 7.3 turbo...

As soon as I hit the slightest incline (boost at 5psi) I shoot up around 900*+. Wouldn't boost suck if I had leaky up-pipes? I checked up-pipes a couple of weeks ago and had no soot. I'm thinking I shouldn't get the cloud of black/white smoke just when I change lanes (maybe 1/4 throttle) either. The cloud is big enough to cover 3 lanes on the interstate.... kind of fun.
Pull your intake tube off and grab the compressor wheel, feel for any play up or down and in and out. The smoke makes me think you may have a bad turbo...
You should be able to get to 25 easily without horrible EGTs. With the 6637 and 5" exhaust, you shouldn't be at 1250 until you've been on it for a while. Like Curtis said, you have other issues. Check your boots for leaks/tears (might want to build that cheap PVC boost tester), and look for soot around the up-pipes and make sure they're not loose. You have classic symptoms of a leak someplace (high EGTs, low boost). I can hit 25-27 easily and not be in the red until I'm over 100mph and still have my foot in it.

I can tell you that my truck sounds like a helicopter ALL THE TIME! I pulled the tube a few months back and had no play. I'll go out there and do it again today. I have oil all over the top of the motor. Looks like its coming from the boots to me. I have to get it fixed on a shoestring budget before my trip to the gulf coast Memorial Day weekend.
How does it act in the other settings on the chip ?
Ran pretty much the same in the 60 tow and got hotter than crap really quick in the 120 setting. There's another thread around here about EGTs. I noticed my pyro does not go back to 0 when I shut it down. It sits around 125. Bad probe? I bought the autometer kit from Jegs. I'll try the stock setting when I go to Autozoo later. Anyone know of a site similar to this for Subarus? I have to do the brakes on my girlfriend's WRX today.
EDIT: on 60 tow I got 17psi, 50mph (speed limit), 900*. 120 race I was looking at 25psi, 50mph (speed limit), 1100*.

Reason: Boost Levels

No play in and out, very little play up/down and side/side. The wheel looks dusted, but I bought the truck with 99K on it (stock air box) then I did the 6637. The puddle is back in the valley. Cleaned it up a couple of weeks ago to try to see what was leaking. Still no idea there either. Can't build a leak detector, don't have a compressor.

For comparison this is my turbo wheel at 94.5K. Stock air intake up to then.
That much oil in just a couple weeks seems like more than just from leaking boots. I didn't do the CCV Mod until 95k and never had oil on top of the engine or any in the valley. Just some oily grime around the boots. Try to find where that oil is coming from other than the boots.
You can always use a compressor at a station or a shop.

Thats pretty much what mine looks like. I may be in a little batter shape. I'll try the leak detector.
