I'm getting ready to replace the u-joints on the rear driveshafts. The problem is I'm having a hard time locating the correct part numbers for my truck. My parents replaced the u-joints on their trucks last year, and had to make several trips to the auto parts store because they kept getting the wrong ones for their 2003 SD. I'm trying to avoid that hassle.
Anyway, my truck is a 2002, crew cab, short bed, 4x4. I have the two-piece rear driveshaft, and I need the part numbers for all of the rear u-joints. Around here there's Napa, Carquest, Autozone, and a Pep Boys a few miles away.
If anyone has part numbers where I can just walk in and buy the ones I need, it will be greatly appreciated. The guys at the parts counter are just as confused as I am.
I went through the same thing last weekend. I went to NAPA to get replacement universals for the one at the rear axle and the one at the carrier bearing. My truck is the same configuration as yours and according to their listing, both universals are part #330 which are greaseable joints. I had to go behind the counter myself to look at the computer because it was confusing the guy that worked there. It was actually confusing me as well because there are so many different configurations listed. The key was to look for the part # that was listed for a 156" wheelbase.
I haven't installed them yet because it rained last weekend so it's on my plate for this weekend. Hopefully they are the right ones.
Anyway, I'll let you know if they were correct after I attempt to install them this weekend.
Almost forgot to let you know that the NAPA part # 330 is the correct part # for the rear shaft at the axle and the slip-joint. I got mine installed last weekend. The universal on the slip-joint was very easy to change. The universal at the axle on the other hand was a MO FO.
Mine were so rusted and stuck that I had to PB blast them and let it sit overnight before I could hammer them out.
Time for the "gaseous wrench" - the torch. Just heat up the cup, it expands, breaks the corrosion, let it cool off, it should come right out. Should.
Don't heat the hoop itself
I had to change the rear u-joint on my '01 already, and couldn't get the darn thing out of the hoops. Pushed the u-joint both ways with a press (vice) and it wouldn't push the cups far enough to allow the u-joint to be angled out and removed. I had to cut the darn thing with a cutoff wheel.

Art,
You said "already", how many miles do you have on your truck? Mine is an '01 as well with a little over 113K miles on it and they needed changed pretty badly. Right above each universal there was grease splattered on the underneath side of the cab and bed. The joint on the short shaft (out of the tranny) is the same way but I haven't gotten around to changing it yet. Looks like it's going to be a PITA.
I only have 30K miles currently. Almost all except 10K miles were stop-and-go and lots of pulling things - heavy things - through the woods, over dirt, you name it.
I guess it held in there pretty good. I didn't even know it was shot until I dropped the driveshaft to do the "startup clunk" lube to the slip joint
