I have a 2002 f250 7.3l and it makes a loud whirling sound in the rear but its almost like a wind type noise its a giant pain in the *** to diag and need some help 30-50mph with you foot of the gas (coasting) possibly the diff or slipped belt in the tire?/tires? the truck tracks straights and does not pull so I dunno im gonna remove the diff cover and check the fluid/diff gears hit me up with some info please!!
Welcome to FTE. It sounds like you're on the right track. I'd check the diff fluid level first just to be on the safe side, then try rotating the tires.
Remember noise tends to travel and may be coming from the front too so don't rule that out. I had a noise that everyone that rode with me told me was from the rear when I thought it was the front. Turned out to be a bad shock on the right front that ruined the tire, but it was hard to pinpoint.
Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find. I'm sure we can come up with more suggestions if needed.
The rear differential bearings are smoked, that was the obnoxiuos noise under load... Is this a common condition and better yet are they a pain in the *** to r/r
