My buddy has an 03 F-150 FX4, the rear end is making some hellacious noises we are going to try changing the diff oil first to see if that helps. What gear oil should I use? My 00 expy uses 75w140 synthetic, the tag looks like it says 75w90 its hard to read though. Also the rear shocks are blown any suggestions on what brand to use. Thanks in advance.
the new spec is 75 W 140 full synthetic for all alxes. I fyou have a LS (limmit slip) rear end, you need to add a tube of friction modifier also. You can get the 7 oz bottle at Auto Zone for $8.
If you are using a full synthetic you don't need a friction modifier. I've had Edelbrock IAS shocks on my FX4. A bit pricey but worth it. If you want less expensive shocks a good gas shock like KYB is also a good choice.
Inspect the rear gear area for chips laying in the bottom, chips out of the ring and pinion, spiders etc.
If nothing, suspect the EMG brake hardware of coming apart and jambing.
Tip off there is to rotate the wheels with the trans in neutral and listen for rubbing and odd noises from either side and even some binding.
You need two bottles of lube to refill.
Good luck.
I just put new clutch packs and spiders in my 03 supercrew. Used full synthetic 75-140 with 6oz of modifier still had some noise when turner hard to add 4oz more and it was fine. If you pull the cover check for play in the spiders as stated above. If the clutch packs are wore out the side gears could be loose and it will make a clicking noise when slowing down. Jack it up and spin the tires and see if it makes a clicking noise. I'd start with checking the parking brake they are notorious for coming apart and making a bunch of racket. Good luck!
