Any tricks for removing the crankshaft bolt that holds the harmonic balancer on? I put a 1/2" breaker bar on it and actually lifted the front of the 500lbs engine off the ground and the bolt wouldn't breack free. Unfortunatly i don't have an air compressor at that location. All i need to do is change the freaking timing chain!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Jan-02 AT 09:29 PM (EST)]IMPACT GUN!!! If not available and the pan is removed you can wedge a dowel or something soft(fiberglass handle) between the block and crank. Or get a strap wrench and a buddy to apply opposite force. GOOD LUCK!!!
Dohhhhh!!! Disregard the first suggestion, I just read the compressor comment.
I suppose i could haul my compressor out there and bring my impact home from work (Ingersol Rand IR2131, 600ftlbs torque!!!). Hopefully i won't snap the thing off.
Your harmonic balancer has a few holes going through it that line up with the webing of the timing chain cover. I had to use two bolts from the water pump to lock it in place. Slide the bolts in until they make contact with the front of the cover. Turn the harmonic until they make contact then start appling steady pressure until they let go. Just be gentle. It took all of two minutes when I did it this way. Strap wrench won't work for crap if it has grease on the balancer. I know from experiance. I had to get mine off without the impact and strap wrench. Just don't jerk the breaker bar or you might break the timing cover webing.
You can also thread in the bolts in the balancer that hold the pulley on, but let them stick out. Then take a long piece of metal and stick it on front of the balancer and let the bolts sticking out catch the metal. Either have somebody else hold on to the metal, or let it swing around and catch on the frame of the truck.
