Operating Temperature
I have a 93 4.9, I use it to drive to and from college. On the long trips it runs quite cold, on the gauge it is way left of the "N" in normal, sometimes even left of the "C". It only gets up to the N when I am stop and go driving for a long time. Could this be affecting my fuel mileage? Wouldn't this make the comp send more fuel making it run rich? I will start with replacing the thermostat, maybe it is stuck open? Could it be something else? Thanks for the help.

The stock gauge is garbage. Base nothing on what it tells you. No one can really say if "close to the N" is okay or not because it's not quantifiable data. Besides, those electrical sending units change over time so what it's telling you may not even be right. If you want to really know what's going on, install a mechanical gauge and get some numbers. Only then can we really tell you anything.
