I replaced my starter, fuel pump, coil, and solenoid about a month ago. It was running fine after that for a few days then the temp skyrocketed on my 10 minute commute. I did not have time to work on it for about a week. I put some water in there and it did not get hot so i thought i was golden. then the real problem showed it's ugly face. while I was driving last weekend , I stopped for a car that was turning left and when i went to start again, it slammed and made a loud click. The kind it makes when your fuel pump is bad. I pull over and rev it up for a second and it is fine. Runs fine for half an hour and then it gets even worse. every time i push the gas more than a little bit, it acts like it is not getting fuel especially when going up hill. The idle had also been a little rough lately, but nothing terrible.
It is an '81 with a motorcraft 2150 carb and a mechanical fuel pump. Could it possibly be the timing chain slipping making the idle rough and the fuel pump not pump fuel? There is probably a reasonable explanation, but it seems to me that Bronco gods are just mad at me for letting the temp get high.
Have you pulled the pump to inspect the lever? I am assuming its a typical mech. pump with the lever that rides a cam to operate it. Other than your theory about jumped timing, thats where I'd start.
Well, if u just replaced the fuel pump a month ago, I'm guessing thats not it. Have u checked your fuel filter to your carb, or maybe u have one before your pump? If the filter is good, then I would check the carb for maybe a stuck float. Tale off the carb's fuel bowl and clean it out with carb cleaner. Then check to see if the float assy is sticky or whatever.

After what I read, I would have to agree with breystreak....the "slam" would have me believing that something physical may have happened to the lever to the fuel pump. That is if its the type I think it is.
I replaced the Dist. cap and that seemed to get rid of it. I am not sure because it did not act up last time until it had been driving for about an hour. I plan on taking it out this weekend and possibly taking off the carb and maybe the fuel pump and checking everything out. The old cap was pretty corroded and I am still waiting for the rotor to come in. Hopefully it is fixed for a week or two. Thanks for the help.
