What heads can I swap onto my 351W for a cheap upgrade? The engine is a 75 in a 79 F150 2wd. Bottom end is all stock, cam & timing chain will be changed in the spring, Edelbrock intake & Holley carb. I was thinking the heads from my 88 351 EFI would be good b/c they would bump up the compression ratio. Any thoughts on this? How about 5.0 heads? Did they use the same valve sizes as the 5.8 heads?
The best 351w production head was the DOOE head. They have slightly larger intake ports, 60.4 cc combustion chambers (10 to 1 with flatops-8.5 - 9.0 to 1 with dish pistons), 1.85 intake & 1.55 exhaust valves. If $ allows, have the "bumps" ground off in the exhaust ports, and have the ex. ports ported out to macth the gaskets. I have done just that on my DOOE heads, Man can I tell a big difference :7. I have around $300 invested in my heads.
$30 for the heads
150 for machine work & hardend valve seats
120 for the porting work
I also installed new stainlees valves and new springs & retainers, that was an additional $250
Wow you spent that much on machine work? sheesh, and me just waiting for a `95 lightning to show up in my junkyard...hehe, I dont have a cherry picker but I'm buyen a cherry picker and wheeling it in the day that sucker arives
What about Twisted Wedge? AFR? Canfield? Edelbrock? I do agree that the cheapest way to go would be to port a set of stock heads. It's improve air flow, and you could also refresh the vavle-train while you're in there.
If you're looking for radical improvement, however, you're going to probably want to go with a good set of aftermarket heads. It's all about how much power you want to make. below 400HP, you're probably okay with ported stock heads. Above, you're not.
I look at it like this: a friend of mine slapped a Vortech S-Trim on his stock 5.0L HO. That critter was pushing 350HP! He went to ported AFR, I think 165's, and it added like 50-60HP!
My two cents.

The "D0" in D0OE does stand for 1970, however my source shows this casting number being used from 1970 to 1974. I just picked up an engine supposedly out of a '74 Torino and it has the D0OE heads so my source is correct so far. My info shows casting D5TE as having 1.84 intakes and 1.54 exhausts and being used from 1975 to 1977. Chamber size shows as being 60.4 cc. I do not know if these castings are capable of flowing as well as the D0Oe's, but I wouldn't replace them with E7s because the E7s have puny 1.78 and 1.45 valves and ports that flow about as well as a swizzle stick.

I am in the process of putting those D0OE heads on my Mustang 351W. Waiting on them to get back from the machine shop. If you get lucky, you can find some 69 351W heads which were even better than the 70-74 D0OE heads. Chances are slim to none, but it could be done. Port match the D0OE and have some screw in studs installed and you should be on your way to a semi-cheap performance upgrade. Be careful not to put too much cam in a motor with stock press-in studs or they will press themselves right back out. Good luck!
