What is that?

I have a '72 F100 that I am working on. The electrical work was piece-mealed together over the years so it needed complete overhauling. I bought an EZWiring kit and began removing all of the old wiring. When I came to the engine bay and started removing all the wires I came to an electrical part bolted to the left wheel well right next to the battery. There is a three-prong adapter that has wiring running into the solenoid and into the firewall with the main wiring group. I have no idea what this part is and if it is even needed. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks.

Welcome to FTE

What size is the engine?

Look closely, is there any sort of a number on this electrical part? If so, post what you find.

The engine gauge feed wiring harness has wires that run to all the electrical parts under the hood, then plugs into the main wiring harness.

Between the battery and the starter solenoid is the HORN RELAY. This part has three staggered spade connectors, and uses two bolts to attach it to the fender apron.

This is the only part I see in the wiring diagram that fits the criteria.

If it's on the inner finder near the started solenoid its the horn relay.

If it's on the radiator support it's the voltage regulator for the alternator.

I agree with numberdummy. A horn relay plug looks like a triangle. The relay is 2" X 2" X 1" thick and mounted close to the solenoid. Your new harness may come with a new relay. The voltage regulator is 3" X 3" X 1 1/2" thick and is attached to the radiator support with 3 screws. It has a flat 4 terminal plug that plugs into it.

The original style voltage (alternator) regulator (the cover is about 3" high and is either painted black or blue) has four spade connectors in a row, OP sez the mystery part has three.

The later replacement regulators have a shiny cover that's 1" high and sez electronic on it.

C4AB-13853-A2 = number marked on the horn relay, if original.

Thanks all, after reading all your posts and doing some more research the horn relay was the answer I was looking for. Much appreciated. I'll post more as my wiring harness install progresses I'm sure.

Thanks.

Yep that would be the horn relay. I did the same job with the ez- wiring kit myself.

Oh yeah, When I redid my wiring, in place of the resistor wire off of the ignition switch I installed a ballast resistor from a 68 dodge on it.
