sometimes they will come right off... but other times you can not make them come off... i had one that would come off everytime i shifted... but i put a piece of paper on the part it slips over and slapped the shifter on top of it all and you can not pull it off now... and i know of a guy that put a piece of a condom in there to solid it up... he said it worked... but i think the paper is a better idea...

I was told to heat them up with a heat gun and use a wrench and stick it underneath the shifter ****, and then a mallet and smack up on the wrench after you get it warmed up a little. Should come right off.
