How do you remove the factory gear shifter **** from a 94' explorer sport? i've tried pulling and twisting it from the shaft and it won't budge at all (it's manual transmission)

Might be a stupid question, but any help would be appreciated.

Straddle the shifter, grab the **** with both hands and pull up. Be careful you do not smash into your nose when the know comes off. So put a new **** on, you can use a couple drops of super glue to the inside of the new ****. You can heat the old **** with a hair dryer, but usually it comes off with a good pull.
