I am getting ready to start a new project.
I just bought a 88 ranger extra cab 4wheel drive 5 speed
It runs good but is weak Its rusty on the bed and fenders
I have a 302 I plan to rebuild and Put in it
I have a couple of questions before i get into this
what beds will fit . I heard it had to be from extra cab
the truck has a small v6 will I be able to use the trans thats in it
Well this will get me started .
Thanks for your input
The Ranger extra cab uses a short bed, which is about 6 feet long. You can use a newer Ranger short bed even if it's from a standard cab. They mount the same. When using a v8 in a swap it's usually better to use a transmission from a v8 with it. Even if you find an adapter for a v6 tranny, they don't last too long behind a v8. I may not be correct on this but then I haven't read about some of the latest swaps that work well. Some one else on the forum may be along to tell you what works or doesn't. A few companies offer swap kits that you could look up, just to see what they list in their kit as to what tranny it goes with.
Use a T-5 from a mustang or a manual tranny from an F-150. I picked up an 88 4x4 for a project myself. I went down to W,Va to get a rust free one, it was setting in a barn, got it for 500 bucks. I believe I'm going to build a 4.0 for mine.
