Replace CPSensor portion good maintenance?

Replace CPSensor portion good maintenance?
My 2002 Ranger 3.0 has 42,000 miles. if I replace the sensor part of the CPS, will that stave off failure of the shaft part? If so, I'd put one in there about every 20,000 miles, just to avoid the hassle (and expense) of the whole assembly...or will doing this before anything breaks make sense at all???
