I am buying a 76 highboy. The cab is pretty bad on it. The truck comes with an extra cab. The extra cab is a 79. The truck has the orginal cab on it with the gas tank in the cab. The 79 cab doesnt have a hole for the filler neck to come through. The bed on it was replaced with a 78,79 bed with a door for the gas tank. Can I take the tank from the cab and set it under the bed between the frame or would I have to buy a new tank? What is the best and cheapest way to fix this?
I agree. I've done this swap myself (drilled a hole in the side for the filler, mounted the tank in the cab, etc.) and it's a pain. The major snag you're going to run into however, is the rear cab mounts. The frame on the hi-boy is narrower. Put the cab on the frame, square up the cab and snug the front bolts. Now go under the truck. If I remember correctly, you can drill up through frame holes. Also there are locating dimples stamped into the sheet metal. The floor of the cab back there is double walled. by drilling all the way up you have a locating hole for a hole saw for access for a socket.
