carburetor help

well, things are moving along with the prep of my 351w. I was just going to keep the stock 2 BBL carb until I get the extra cash for EFI, but when I took the carb off to set up engine hoist plate, one of the mounting holes on the carb body was just cracked off. so I need a cheep carb to get it running. JY is out of the question (location=$$$)

any suggestions?

I saw this, $220 shipped

I don't have that exact carb but I do have a 500CFM 4412 Holley on my truck and I love it. It fits perfectly.

The first one has no provision for a choke, while the second one was designed to have a choke, but it's missing. I wouldn't spend this much money on a carb which will be replaced soon by EFI. How about just buying a stock one from the junkyard or swap meet?

You could also get your carburetor base welded (it's aluminum) or use a longer stud and a distributor hold down to fasten that corner.

the JY around here will charge well over a hundred if they hear you say carburetor (NY Prices apply). there are no swap meets in the city (space constriction). the EFI wont come for a while, I have a list for the jeep and it falls under axles and brakes. any other suggestions? I would like to buy something already rebuilt and simple to get running.

Grab a junk carb off eBay and spend 50 bucks (kit, chem-dip, misc other stuff) to rebuild it. Done it before!

Go to autozone.com and get a stock rebuilt, or buy one of the bunches of them on ebay. Now for the kicker, either one may be a piece of crap. This forum has a classifieds and there are others , and don't forget about Craigs list. com. Don't dismiss the earlier advice about a carb kit, while it's not the simplelest thing you'll ever do, it's not rocket science, and the result may not give you max performance or fuel economy, but it will most likely perform well enough to get you down the road in the interim.

Well how about "use a longer stud and a distributor hold down to fasten that corner."?

If you don't have a spare distributor hold down, how about just using a mess of washers and the nut on the stud to hold down this corner? The carb will be held pretty securely with the other three studs and nuts so this final corner can be kind of hokey for a temporary fix.

PS A C-note for a junkyard carb seems outrageous.

I'm trying to load up on options here and its working. the JY around here have to pay crazy rent, $1900 for a 1 bedroom apartment, imagine how much a whole lot would cost. I am going to do the distributor hold down thing until I figure something out

Why not the eBay idea? Last time I went that route it ran me $10 for a perfect used carburetor (MC2100) and all I had to do was rebuild it.
